Wayfinding & Environmental
Designing signage with personality
The new Roehampton library was designed by FCBS designed with an elegant form and sophisticated material palette. We wanted our design system to reflect core structure of the building. After reading a key phrase from our briefing document, ‘Little black dress,’ the elegant, stylish and charming Audrey Hepburn was our initial inspiration for our design approach – a no nonsense character, exquisitely turned out and naturally beautiful. The signage reflects this simple and stylish aesthetic, and the layered materials of key directional signage echoes the gilded edges of historical books.
Bespoke and handcrafted detail
The final signage designs were completed with specialist signage contractors and are bespoke for the library. Using a base of oak veneer, graphic elements were printed directly to the face of the board. This creates a beautifully textured panel, imbuing the signage with a feeling of permanence and maturity. Additional cut metal elements were attached directly to oak furniture to create simple and effective direction. The layered structure of key signage elements like directories and hanging signage is all hand crafted.
The building is conceived to be a mature and sophisticated space to encourage good behaviour and academic attitude. The positive feedback confirms the success and impact of our approach: ‘The footfall increased by a 47% increase in the first six weeks of opening.’
