Looking inside the science
Working closely with the president, HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan (UNESCO Special Envoy for Science for Peace) we developed a clear organisational structure and accompanying brand architecture and hierarchy. Then we turned our attention to a creative solution for a visual identity that has a flexible system of logos for Arabic, English and Bilingual usage.

The roundel is designed with reference to the scientific research within the organisation and also the seven-pointed star of Jordan. The heraldic quill, representing knowledge, and the spade, representing endeavour, are retained and sit beneath the Royal Crown of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The Purple is inspired by the true colour of The Black Iris, the national flower of Jordan which is a symbol of growth, renewal and change. Although called ‘black’, in the flesh it appears in varying shades of dark purple.

The RSS brand patterns are inspired by the structural forms of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) – a strong focus of research and development onsite at the RSS. As well as being globally significant for their ability to capture harmful gases, the MOF structure beautifully illustrates the interconnected RSS community. We collaborated with engineers to build 3D MOF structures in CAD, enabling us to ‘look inside the science’ and create a broad suite of patterns. They range from formal to funky with flexible usage depending on content and context.
