The annual Arts & Business Awards celebrate excellence in the field of cultural partnerships and sponsorship. Each year Arts & Business run an open competition to commission an artist to create the range of award trophies.

Thomas Matthews created the winning proposal based on the principle that ‘Arts’ and ‘Business’ are polar opposites, which both attract and repel simultaneously. The creative idea translates incredibly well to the use of magnets and metal filings, which are the core elements of the award.

To create the award vessels Thomas Matthews worked with Louis Thompson, an RCA graduate and leading figure in cutting edge design solutions in hot glass. The collaboration resulted in beautiful bespoke glass vessels, each with a unique colour spectrum.

Contained within the glass awards are iron filings, a waste material salvaged from London Mechanical Lift Engineers – Pye London. These filings are attracted to a removable central magnet to create endless internal sculptures, an interactive process that constantly re-interprets the magnetic attraction between arts and business and how ongoing interaction allows exciting new developments to evolve.
